Our Story

Built from the inside.
For all of us.

Black Excellence UK began with a simple observation, and a decision not to wait for someone else to act on it.

"Black Excellence UK grew out of a shared observation: our community was often not in the room. So we decided to start building the rooms ourselves."

Where It Started

Black Excellence UK started from a question that many of us were asking. Across professional events, civic forums, and institutional spaces in the UK, one thing stood out consistently: our community was present but rarely visible, capable but rarely given a pathway in. We realised that though we had talented and motivated members of our community, the connections and access were not always there.

Our founder, Ayo, came to the UK as an international student to complete a Masters and a PhD. Those years gave him a front-row view of the gap between what our community had to offer and what was being asked of them by the institutions around them. That experience was the spark. But what followed was never one person's project.

We started by bringing people together. Community gatherings, conversations, and events where Black professionals could meet, support each other, and begin to build the kinds of relationships that open doors. We had a genuine belief that showing up consistently and connecting people was worth doing.

After many leadership sessions, career events, personal development workshops, politics awareness evenings, and countless hours of informal support to students and young professionals across Leicestershire, Black Excellence UK grew into something with more structure and more reach. We incorporated as a Community Interest Company, built formal partnerships with universities and civic institutions, and developed programmes designed to help our community lead at the highest levels.

We do not claim to have all the answers. But we are committed to contributing, consistently, to a community that has always had the talent. We are just helping build the infrastructure to match it.

Bukunmi Shonde

"Volunteering at Black Excellence UK's event greatly impacted me. Dr Ashiedu Joel's advice to lead with confidence and Olusiji Sanya's entrepreneurial journey gave me the push to take action on my own ideas. Huge thanks to the BE team for such an inspiring event. I left feeling motivated and ready for growth."

What We Believe

Three convictions
that drive what we do.

I
Excellence is not the exception

Black professionals across the UK are doing remarkable things in every sector. The barriers they face are not about capability. They are about visibility, access, and the structures that decide who gets to lead. We are here to work on those structures alongside our community.

II
Community is infrastructure

Progress does not happen alone. It takes networks, institutions, and people who show up for each other over the long term. Black Excellence UK is a civic project. We are here to build the kind of connective tissue that helps our community move forward together, not just individually.

III
We build things that last

A good event is not enough on its own. We put our energy into structured programmes, real partnerships, and relationships that hold over time. Lasting change takes sustained effort. We are not here to talk about what needs to happen. We are here to do the work.

Our Journey

Nearly a decade
in the making.

2016
Founded
The First Gathering

We started by bringing people together. The early events were community get-togethers where Black professionals could meet, talk, and begin building the kind of relationships that institutions rarely facilitate on their own. Simple in format, but important in intent.

2019
Civic Engagement
Meet Your Elected Representative

We hosted our flagship civic engagement event, connecting around 15 community members directly with elected representatives including Nicky Morgan MP, now Baroness Morgan of Cotes, and Jewel Miah. A practical step towards building real relationships between our community and the people who shape local and national policy.

2021
Incorporated
Became a Community Interest Company

Black Excellence Hub UK CIC was formally registered at Companies House, giving the organisation a proper legal structure, a board, and a clear mandate to serve the community. In the same year we launched a virtual careers event in partnership with PepsiCo, connecting Black students with hiring managers and internship opportunities across technology, science, commercial, and engineering roles.

2022
Education
Black Excellence in Oxbridge

We hosted a dedicated Oxbridge application insights event, bringing together six Black students from the University of Oxford studying medicine, engineering, biochemistry, law, economics, and PPE. The session gave aspiring students direct access to the kind of guidance that is not always easy to come by, and reflected our commitment to supporting the next generation into the most competitive academic spaces.

2024
Partnership
Leadership to Legacy at Loughborough University

Our annual Black History Month leadership forum was hosted at Loughborough University Business School, bringing together senior academics, practitioners, and community leaders. This deepened a partnership that now underpins our flagship fellowship programme and reflects our commitment to building serious institutional relationships.

2025
Recognition
Loughborough Community Heroes Award

Black Excellence UK was recognised with the Loughborough Community Heroes Award, an acknowledgement from the city we work in of the contribution we have made since 2016. We are proud of this recognition, and more proud of the people whose work it reflects.

2026
Flagship Programme
The Emerging Leaders Fellowship, Cohort 1

Our most structured programme to date. A selective three-month leadership accelerator for Black professionals in the UK, delivered in partnership with Loughborough University Business School. Six sessions, a Westminster Parliament visit, a cohort of 8 to 10 fellows, and a public showcase. The most ambitious thing we have built so far.

What We Do

Three pillars.
One mission.

Leadership Development
I
Leadership Development

We design and run structured programmes that help Black professionals develop the skills, confidence, and networks to lead at senior levels. Our flagship Emerging Leaders Fellowship is the most formal expression of this, but leadership development runs through everything we do — from workshops and career events to mentoring and one-to-one support.

Community Engagement
II
Community Engagement

We create spaces where our community can engage with institutions, employers, elected representatives, and civic life. From politics awareness sessions to corporate careers events and community health talks, we work to make sure our community has access to the kinds of conversations and relationships that shape opportunity.

III
Celebrating Excellence

We tell the stories of Black achievers across the UK, in business, academia, public service, healthcare, and the arts. Through interviews, features, and community spotlights, we put Black excellence on the record. Because representation matters, and so does seeing people who look like you doing remarkable things.

The People

Who we are
behind the work.

Directors
Dr Ayodeji Akiwowo
Founder and Director Data and AI Consultant, Global Technology Consulting

Ayo founded Black Excellence UK in 2016 after noticing, across professional and civic spaces in the UK, that our community was consistently absent from the rooms where decisions were made. His background as a researcher and his professional experience in data and technology inform the way the organisation thinks about leadership, access, and what it takes to build something that lasts.

PhD MSc CIC Director
Opeyemi Sanwoolu
Co-Director, Operations Global R&D Director, Foods Integration (Strategy)

Opeyemi oversees the operational running of Black Excellence UK. He makes sure that programmes are planned and delivered well, that partnerships are managed effectively, and that the day-to-day work of the organisation gets done. His contribution is what keeps things moving behind the scenes.

Loughborough
Community Heroes Award

Black Excellence UK was recognised with the Loughborough Community Heroes Award for our contribution to community development, civic engagement, and the advancement of Black professionals across the region. We are proud of this recognition, but more proud of the people and the work it represents. It is a reflection of what is possible when a community shows up for itself consistently over many years.

LU
Partnership
Loughborough University
Business School

Our partnership with Loughborough University Business School is one we are genuinely proud of. It underpins our annual leadership forum and our flagship Emerging Leaders Fellowship, and it reflects a shared commitment to developing the next generation of Black leaders in the East Midlands. This is the kind of institutional relationship we set out to build from the beginning, and it continues to grow.
